Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus, most commonly in one of the fallopian tubes. This type of pregnancy is not viable, as the fallopian tubes are not equipped to support the developing embryo. As the pregnancy progresses, it can cause the tube to rupture, leading to severe internal bleeding, which is a life-threatening emergency. Symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy may include sharp pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, shoulder pain, and dizziness or fainting. Risk factors for ectopic pregnancy include previous ectopic pregnancies, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, and certain fertility treatments. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of pelvic exams, ultrasounds, and blood tests to measure human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels. Treatment options depend on the stage of the pregnancy and may include medication such as methotrexate to stop the growth of the embryo, or surgical procedures like laparoscopy to remove the ectopic tissue. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent complications and preserve the woman's fertility and overall health.
